Buried Treasure: New York Magazine's 60 Great Albums You Probably Haven't Heard

Image
The Flatlanders' 1972 debut LP  New York Magazine (not to be confused with The New Yorker ) recently published an article for people who are tired of searching everywhere for new art and entertainment in order to remain relevant. Working under the theory that the more birthdays people accumulate the harder it is for them to discover fresh stuff NY Mag decided to help these poor souls by publishing a list of 60 albums you probably haven't heard in their issue of November 18, 2013. They began the article by asking, "Exhausted by trying to keep up with new culture? Why not give up altogether?" Then they selected ten albums from each decade beginning with the 1950s through the 2000s for your consideration. The only album of the sixty that I own is The Flatlanders' 1972 debut, More A Legend Than A Band featuring a lineup that included Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock. All three later went on to have semi-successful solo careers in country...

The Boston Boys - Keep You Satisfied (2013)

Image
The Boston Boys are a young quartet who met at Boston's Berklee School of Music. Currently based out of Brooklyn, NY they are undeniably talented and offer a unique fusion of rock, bluegrass, and folk music. The group has just released their second EP, Keep You Satisfied , that shows off all of the skills students of their prestigious alma mater should possess. In addition to the usual rock instruments The Boston Boys work fiddle, mandolin, a great sense of melody, and fine vocals into their act. They also know how to write lyrics. The title track rocks and the amps are turned up high. Duncan Wickel, plays a killer fiddle solo on "Endless Creation." "Honeycomb" combines rock 'n roll verses and a little bit of soul with an almost bluegrass instrumental chorus. "Take Me Under" is a soft acoustic ballad about someone who is ready to die and go to heaven. "Amelia" sounds like it could be a hit on any adult contemporary radio station...

Kevin Howlett - The Beatles: The BBC Archives (1962 - 1970)

I know what you're thinking. How many years in a row can Beatles related merchandise be released in November for the upcoming Christmas season? Many of the annual holiday releases cover overly discussed terrain so anything new that comes out has to be something quite compelling in order to hold the interest of long time fans. Fortunately, The Beatles: The BBC Archives (1962 - 1970) by Beatles historian, Kevin Howlett, is not just something completely different, it's a gem of a coffee table book. Howlett tells the tale of how important the BBC was to The Beatles' rise to fame over 48 radio shows in 1963, 39 of them featuring their music. Many of these songs were released on The Beatles Live At The BBC in 1994 and on the just released followup, On Air - Live At The BBC, Volume Two , to which Howlett's book not coincidentally serves as a companion. The large edition covers a lot of ground. Even though the Beatles eventually stopped playing on the Beeb before they qui...

As the anniversary of the tragedy approaches Bloggerhythms will leave the politics, single bullet theories, and conspiracy talk to others and instead we'll take a look at the top ten singles of that awful week according to the Billboard Hot 100.
