The Return of The Formerly Brothers is the only CD ever recorded by Amos Garrett, Doug Sahm, and Gene Taylor together as a trio. The title of the CD is derived from the fact that all three were formerly in other bands. Canadian Garrett is best known for playing with folk legends Ian & Sylvia and with Maria Muldaur on "Midnight At The Oasis." He also worked with Jesse Winchester, Emmylou Harris, Paul Butterfield, and Stevie Wonder. Taylor played with The Blasters, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Canned Heat, and Rick Nelson. They teamed up with Sahm who is probably the best known of the three. He was the leader of the Sir Douglas Quintet in the Sixties. Garrett, Sahm, and Taylor first got together for a gig at the Edmonton Folk Festival in 1986 that was so well received they followed it with a tour of Canada. Doug Sahm was always a good time musician. It's what he always wanted to be and it's what he did best. This concert CD, recorded for the PBS TV series, Austin City Limits is no exception. Live From Austin, TX has been released simultaneously on both CD and DVD as part of a series on the New West label and culled from the archives of the acclaimed music performance show. This is a complete concert from November 14, 1975. Augie Meyer who was Sahm's main sideman beginning with The Sir Douglas Quintet in the 60s is on board as usual, playing his Hammond B-3 organ. Meyer contributes most of the best moments on songs that Sahm made famous with the quintet including "Nuevo Laredo," "Rains Came," "Mendocino," and "She's About A Mover." This is a typical Sahm performance because everyone, especially the leader, is having a great time playing the hits, traditional fiddle tunes such as a romping version of "Cotton-Eyed Joe,"...

The large Texas ego allows the city of Austin to brag that they are the "Live Music Capital of the World." The good news is that their claim may have some merit because the city is home to over two hundred venues featuring live music. I'll be making my first trip to The Lone Star State's capital at the end of October so I'll be able to sample it's vibrant music scene firsthand. In order to psych myself up for the vacation I pulled out one of my very favorite CDs, SDQ '98 , by the late Doug Sahm. Sahm, who hailed from neighboring San Antonio and died at the end of 1999, is missed by anyone who enjoys Country-Rock, Roots Rock or Tex-Mex. He first came to prominence as the leader of the Sir Douglas Quintet in 1965. Oldies fans may remember the band's two big hits "She's About A Mover" and "Mendocino."
