Some Random Musical Odds & Ends

Below are some interesting music related odds and ends from around the web for you to enjoy while Bloggerhythms is on hiatus for a couple of weeks. See you in early October.
  • Let's start with an article by JC Mosquito (yes, that's his online moniker), a writer for Something Else Reviews. It's about "Taxi," a minor, 1972 hit from singer-songwriter Harry Chapin that seems to be forgotten today.
  • Murray Gershenz, owner of almost a half million records, has passed away. Read all about him and watch the video about his huge and remarkable collection.
  • At first it appeared that the ipod classic was going to become a thing of the past but after the recently concluded Apple event the old friend is still around. Read about it here.
  • Please take a look at Mike's Basement, an interesting music blog I recently discovered, published by Mike Marrone, the program director of Sirius XM's very good, "contemporary eclectic," radio station, The Loft.

Slower Than Slow: 16 RPM Records

Have you ever heard of a long forgotten vinyl format, the 16 2/3 RPM record? They were half the speed of the 33 1/3 RPM albums that were the traditional standard for recorded music. Most record players in the 1950s and 1960s came with a speed setting to play these long forgotten discs that were considered novelties even during the years they were available. Because most, but not all, 16s had big holes and were 7" in diameter many of them were mistaken for 45 RPMs and at that size the speed allowed for up to 20 minutes of playing time per side. However, there was no true standard size and they were also manufactured to be 9, 10, or 12 inches in diameter and these larger records played even longer. Just like the other speeds and formats 16s could be played one record at a time or stacked on a changer for continuous play. Why Do 45 RPM Records Have Big Holes?

Today we're going to find out why 45 RPM records have much larger holes than 78s and 33s. Believe it or not I often wondered about this burning question when I was collecting hundreds of these little seven inch gems back the 1960s. According to several websites, including Answerbag , the reason for the large hole used by 45s was simple. It was difficult for the old 78s, with their smaller holes, to find their way onto jukebox spindles. The large hole effectively eliminated that problem. Strangely, seven inch 45s were often pressed with the smaller holes used for LPs in many countries outside the United States, especially in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Overseas the inserts (commonly know as spiders) were manufactured into the large holes at the factories but they could be punched out if desired. It's Real Life: An Alternate History Of The Beatles - A Short Story, Radio Play And Full Length Novel By Paul Levinson (2022 and 2024)

In a July 2023 blog post I discussed an alternate history of the most famous rock band of all time. It's Real Life: An Alternate History Of The Beatles was written in 2022 as a short story and radio play by Professor Paul Levinson of Fordham University. Since then, the author has expanded it into a full length novel that includes his original story as chapter one. Jackson Browne And David Lindley At The Philadelphia Folk Festival, Schwenksville, PA, August 19, 2006

A huge rock festival type crowd assembled to see Jackson Browne and David Lindley , his main sideman through most of the 70s, perform live at the famous Philadelphia Folk Festival on a hot summer Saturday afternoon. The two had just returned from a European tour and this was their only stop on the way home to California. Browne and Lindley performed an all acoustic show. The star played his usual acoustic guitar and piano while Lindley, as always, played every string instrument he could get his hands on. He even used two different violins. If they were tired and suffering from jetlag it certainly didn't show in their playing or their enthusiasm. The set list spanned Browne's entire career. Kent State & The Protest Song

One of the things I miss about music today is the protest song. Today's rap crap is frequently too full of violent, misogynistic lyrics (OK, you've made a good point, The Rolling Stones' songs were often full of that stuff too). The current crop of self-absorbed, singer-songwriters - as excellent as many of them are - can not be mistaken for real folk or protest singers even though folk is the genre where a lot of their musical influences were schooled. It's not that there isn't anything left to say and nobody around to say it. Jackson Browne's 2014 album,  Standing In The Breach , is a very politically and socially aware album.
